Building high-performing engineering teams

10월 15 2026

"When pressure mounts, clarity of purpose is the best antidote to chaos."

In this Leaders at Equinix article, Vikrant Bhargava reflects on the leadership principles that have helped his team navigate production issues, reliability challenges, and a period of significant technological transformation.

Building the confidence to act

Vikrant is deliberate about building a psychologically safe environment for his team. “Mistakes are part of moving fast,” Vikrant says. “What matters is that we learn quickly and course correct.”

This shifts the focus from avoiding errors to managing them well. Teams are encouraged to make decisions, learn quickly when things don't go as planned, and keep making progress. The result is a team that can act with confidence. Engineers don't have to wait for perfect certainty before taking action. They make decisions with the information available and take responsibility for the outcome.

Leading with calm under pressure

Pressure changes how teams operate. It can narrow thinking, create distractions, and pull attention away from what's most important. “I make it a point to be more present and accessible during high-pressure periods, not less,” says Vikrant. For him, being present means creating the conditions for the team to do their best work by removing distractions, clearing obstacles, and keeping priorities visible.

Raising standards by investing in people

Vikrant holds his team to a high bar. He expects ownership, curiosity, and a bias toward action. He pairs those expectations with strong support and advocacy. As he explains, “I will challenge you, but I will also champion you.”

He creates alignment around priorities, shares context openly, and actively advocates for his team. People understand what they need to do, how their work connects to outcomes, and where they can grow.

That support extends beyond individual development. Vikrant adds, "There is a genuine support system here. People show up for each other." High standards and strong support go hand in hand, helping people grow while continuing to deliver results.

Leading through transformation

What drew Vikrant to Equinix was the opportunity to be part of what he describes as a "rare and exciting dual transformation" across the business and technology landscape. Hearing CEO and President Adaire Fox-Martin, and CDIO Harmeen Mehta articulate a bold vision reinforced his belief that Equinix was entering an important new chapter. As Vikrant puts it, the company isn't just selling AI, it's also "one of the biggest consumers and drivers of it." Looking back on the decision to join Equinix, Vikrant reflects that "it's one thing to work with technology; it's another to help shape how a global infrastructure leader reimagines itself through it."

In environments where systems are critical and expectations are high, leaders need to create an environment where people can make decisions, learn from mistakes, and navigate uncertainty with confidence.

That's where high-performing teams are built.
