Success in mid-market sales: A day in the life

We caught up with Ockert Cilliers, a senior account executive on the Mid-Market Sales team in Australia, to hear what it’s really like to work in sales at Equinix—and what powers success in this fast-paced, customer-first environment.

Mornings start with coffee and connection

“Most days kick off with a fresh cup of coffee and a quick catch-up with the team,” Ockert shares. “It’s a great way to ease into the day and stay connected.”

From there, it’s a mix of virtual customer meetings, prospecting and prepping for the week ahead. Post-COVID, most interactions are online, but the team still makes time to come together in the office especially over lunch.

“We’ve got a great team culture. Being in the office together makes a big difference.”

The rewarding dynamics of mid-market sales

In mid-market sales, it’s not just about chasing new logos. It’s about nurturing relationships and helping customers grow. As Ockert explains, “About 75% of my time is spent looking after existing accounts. Retention is a huge focus for us.”

That doesn’t mean new business takes a back seat. With clear targets for new account sign-ups, prospecting is a must. The key? Blocking off time on the calendar and using smart tools to stay efficient.

What makes mid-market sales exciting at Equinix? The diversity of customers and the complexity of solutions are the key. “We work with everyone from customers with basic data center needs to those building their own clouds and reselling our services,” Ockert adds. “Every deal is different and requires a different approach to solutioning.” This variety keeps things fresh and challenges the team to think creatively and strategically.

After work, it’s all about balance. For Ockert, that means family time, fitness and the Aussie lifestyle. “I attend my kids’ training sessions most afternoons. I also go for a run or swim, and in the summer, a quick trip to the beach.”
