Who are we?

Equinix is the world’s digital infrastructure company®, shortening the path to connectivity to enable the innovations that enrich our work, life and planet.

A place where bold ideas are welcomed, human connection is valued, and everyone has the opportunity to shape their future.

Joining our operations team means being at the center of everything – maintaining and evolving critical infrastructure that powers the digital world and delivers real impact for our customers, communities and society. You’ll find belonging, purpose, and a team that welcomes you—because when you feel valued, you’re empowered to do your best work.

The Role

As a Lead Critical Facilities Engineer, you are the technical authority and operational leader for critical infrastructure across one or more data center sites. You own the availability, resilience, and long‑term performance of mission‑critical systems (electrical, mechanical, controls), while leading teams, influencing strategy, and driving continuous improvement at scale.

What You’ll Be Doing

Technical leadership & escalation

  • Act as the highest technical escalation for critical infrastructure faults and major incidents, leading diagnosis, containment, recovery, and post‑incident learning
  • Independently navigate complex and unusual facility situations, applying deep technical expertise and sound judgment to resolve issues quickly and safely

Standards, risk & operational excellence

  • Define, improve, and govern engineering standards, preventive maintenance strategies, and operational practices
  • Drive operational maturity by converting recurring issues into lasting improvements across procedures, training, documentation, tooling, and vendor performance

Change management & strategic initiatives

  • Lead or advise on complex change activities and strategic infrastructure initiatives, ensuring strong risk assessment, change control, and safe execution

Coaching & influence

  • Coach senior engineers and act as a technical role model
  • Influence site and cross‑site consistency, acting as a facilitator and informal leader without relying on formal authority

Vendor & stakeholder partnership

  • Govern vendor and contractor activity for specialized maintenance and upgrades
  • Ensure method statements, permits to work, MOP execution, and documentation meet required standards

What You Bring

  • Extensive experience in mission‑critical environments (data centers, critical facilities, telecoms, or similar)
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve complex, multi‑system infrastructure issues under pressure
  • Strong risk management mindset with the ability to influence stakeholders through technical authority and clear judgment
  • Excellent safety discipline with strict adherence to procedures, especially during incidents and change activities
  • Proven experience designing or improving procedures, operational frameworks, and technical standards

Nice to have

  • Experience owning preventive maintenance strategy and reliability improvements across electrical distribution, generators, UPS, cooling plant, BMS/controls, and life‑safety systems
  • Track record of mentoring senior engineers and acting as the technical reference point for one or more sites

Education:

  • Typically a Bachelor degree in electrical or mechanical Engineering, German Meister degree, or similar, plus significant relevant experience.
