Job Profile Summary:
The Capacity Engineer Senior Associate is responsible for resolving a variety of data management, design, and drawing tasks related to customer installations and infrastructure planning. This role operates within a moderate scope and supports the optimization of space, power, and cooling resources across data center environments.
Key Responsibilities
Space Planning & Design
Develops standard Cage-Cabinet design options that meet customer requirements, Equinix standards, and physical site constraints.
Prepares notional Cage-Cabinet layouts, area calculations, and diagrams for standard data centers.
Maximizes space utilization to deliver optimal design solutions for both the IBX and the customer.
Engineering
Applies knowledge of electrical and mechanical infrastructure to align Cage-Cabinet designs with IBX infrastructure.
Assists in preparing high-density review cases.
Collaborates with senior team members to validate and update infrastructure data in capacity systems.
Problem Solving
Resolves standard cross-functional issues involving multiple teams.
Identifies and understands underlying issues using developing analytical skills.
Escalates complex problems to appropriate stakeholders when necessary.
Data & Drawing Management
Works with site operations to resolve discrepancies in infrastructure documentation and customer cage installations.
Ensures AutoCAD drawings and capacity systems accurately reflect the current state of the IBX.
Leads investigations into moderate data issues with support from senior staff.
Produces detailed drawings and space plans for Sales, Site Operations, and other teams.
Creates spatial layouts for customer cages, numbering plans for new sites, and maintains inventory tracking files.
Compiles as-built underground utility drawings to maintain comprehensive site records.
Collaboration
Coordinates with cross-functional teams to identify and resolve power and cooling issues affecting space capacity.
Responds to standard inventory-related inquiries.
Engages stakeholders to reach balanced solutions that meet both customer and company needs.
Escalates planning conflicts between sales and operations when necessary.
May require supervision when addressing more complex questions.
Capacity Feasibility & Optimization
Works with Capacity and Site Engineers to assess infrastructure limitations and propose moderate solutions.
Serves as the first point of contact for the Cage Feasibility Review (CFR) process.
Ensures space assignments maximize data center efficiency and value.
May require guidance for more complex solutioning.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Facilities Management, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
Experience:
2–4 years of experience in data center design, capacity planning, or infrastructure engineering.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in AutoCAD and familiarity with capacity planning tools.
Understanding of data center infrastructure including power, cooling, and space planning.
Experience with infrastructure documentation and drawing management systems.
Soft Skills:
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Effective communication and collaboration skills across technical and non-technical teams.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities within a moderate scope.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in a colocation or data center environment.
Familiarity with industry standards such as Uptime Institute, ASHRAE, or TIA-942.
Knowledge of high-density infrastructure planning and optimization.
