Product managers are responsible for the end-to-end life cycle of a product from concept to launch and beyond. They identify customer needs and market opportunities, define product vision and strategy and manage roadmaps to deliver business outcomes.
They work closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, design and go-to-market functions, to translate requirements into products and ensure successful delivery and adoption. In some teams, responsibilities may be shared with product owners, but the core focus remains on defining the product direction and delivering value to customers.
Product managers sit closer to customers, marketing and the broader business, ensuring the product strategy reflects real user needs and market priorities, while product owners focus on enabling engineering teams to deliver against that strategy.
Together, they connect customer insight, business goals and technical execution to ensure products are both valuable and delivered effectively.
Product managers work closely with modern, full-stack and cloud-based technologies that power global digital infrastructure.
Depending on the team and product, this can include:
- Cloud and data platforms: Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services such as Cloud Composer, Airflow, BigQuery and observability tools supporting data lakes.
- Databases: Oracle and Postgres, enabling large-scale data processing and storage.
Testing and build tools: Jest and webpack for application development and performance. - Backend systems: Java Spring and Maven supporting scalable, production-ready services.
- Design systems: Components such as Quix to ensure consistent user experience across applications.
Other key technical capabilities include:
- Strong understanding of the software development life cycle (SDLC) and how products are built and delivered.
- Fluency in working with engineering teams and modern development environments, with the ability to understand technical concepts and trade-offs.
- Comfort engaging with software development technologies and architectures, without needing to code (e.g., backend systems, APIs, data flows, microservices).
This exposure allows product managers to work closely with engineering teams, understand system design and trade-offs, and make informed product decisions.
