Continuous growth: Kotaro Furuya’s journey in Customer Operations

As part of our Inside Moves series, we’re excited to feature Kotaro Furuya’s transition to Customer Operations Engineer III at Equinix’s Tokyo data centers. Kotaro’s story highlights how growth can start with a single conversation with a manager, demonstrating the value of learning from colleagues, embracing new responsibilities and pursuing evolution at our future-driven company.

What inspired you to explore a new opportunity within Equinix?

My colleagues have been a constant source of inspiration. Observing their dedication and sense of ownership made me realize how much I wanted to further align my own professional growth with Equinix’s objectives. I felt ready to adopt more complex responsibilities and contribute more effectively to our team’s success. The opportunity to take on new challenges felt like a meaningful step forward for my development, and I knew it would help me develop both personally and professionally.

How did you first learn about the role?

I first heard about the new position during a conversation with my manager. We regularly discuss my performance and career aspirations, and during one of these talks, my manager suggested I consider moving into this expanded role. Having that direct encouragement made the transition feel natural and supported.

What motivated you to take the leap internally instead of looking externally?

This new role was a logical next step from my current position, allowing me to build on the skills, knowledge and experience I had already developed. By moving internally, I could offer a seamless transition and focus on supporting the team and contributing to our goals. I also felt that staying with Equinix would give me more opportunities for progression and learning than starting over somewhere new.

What steps did you take to prepare for the move?

To prepare, I gradually increased the area of responsibility in my previous role, taking on new tasks and challenges to prove my readiness for the next step. I sought out opportunities to manage a broader scope of work and made sure to demonstrate my ability to handle more complex projects. This hands-on approach equipped me with the skills and confidence needed for the transition.

What were you most excited—or nervous—about when making the transition?

I was excited about the chance to grow and take on new challenges, but I was also nervous about making mistakes because of the larger scope of my new role. This apprehension pushed me to develop stronger attention to detail and a greater awareness of potentia risks. Ultimately, it helped me become more careful and thoughtful in my work, a valuable lesson.

How has this new role challenged you professionally?

Beyond my core technical responsibilities, this role has stretched my capability to take proactive ownership of the entire project life cycle. I’m now responsible for moving initiatives forward, ensuring important tasks are completed, and making sure unfinished tasks are prioritized and executed. This has required me to be more organized, decisive and collaborative, shaping even deeper value as a key member of the team.

What are you most proud of accomplishing since making the move?

I’m most proud of earning the trust to take on more responsibilities. Being recognized for my efforts and given the opportunity to contribute at a higher level has been incredibly rewarding. I’m grateful for the support from my managers and team, which has made this transition possible.

How has your experience changed your perspective on career growth at Equinix?

My experience has shown me that there are many opportunities for growth within Equinix. The company truly supports employees who want to advance and develop new skills. I now see my career as a journey with many possible paths, and I’m excited to keep exploring what’s next.

What advice would you give to other employees thinking about their next step?

I recommend talking to someone who has already experienced a similar transition. Hearing firsthand about their journey helped me gain clarity and confidence about the process. It’s important to seek advice and learn from others, as it can make your own path much clearer and less daunting.

What do you wish more people knew about internal mobility or career conversations?

I think more people should know that internal mobility often starts with a simple conversation. Talking openly with your manager about your goals can create opportunities for you across the company—opportunities you might not see at first!

What’s next for you? Any new goals or skills you’re excited to develop?

I’m eager to develop my training skills so I can help others advance and succeed. Sharing knowledge and supporting my colleagues are priorities I look forward to as I continue my own journey.

If you could describe your career journey in one word or phrase, what would it be and why?

Continuous growth. I see my career as a road for constant learning, where every role gives me a chance to become a better version of myself through new experiences and knowledge.
