Job Summary

The Customer Operations Engineer IV plays a critical role in delivering reliable, high-quality customer operations within a mission-critical data center environment. This role applies strong technical expertise and professional judgment to execute customer and operational activities, resolve service issues, and support infrastructure reliability. The engineer works independently within established procedures, contributes to continuous improvement initiatives, and helps ensure customer commitments are met while maintaining safety, accuracy, and service excellence.

Responsibilities

Queue Management / Reporting

  • Review and execute work orders in accordance with committed service levels and customer expectations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve customer tickets and operational issues.
  • Ensure all required reporting is accurate, complete, and delivered in a timely manner.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and provide recommendations to enhance operational efficiency and service delivery.
  • Maintain detailed records of all work activities and customer interactions.
  • Update local asset databases and supporting systems to ensure data integrity and accuracy.

Installations

  • Perform rack-and-stack activities and support customer equipment deployments within the data center.
  • Interpret installation plans, diagrams, and spreadsheets to execute installations accurately and efficiently.
  • Support infrastructure installations, including overhead cable trays, cage mesh, cabinets, cable management systems, fiber terminations, and cable distribution infrastructure.
  • Identify and escalate capacity, space, or cabling concerns related to customer deployments and infrastructure expansion.
  • Perform quality assurance checks on cross-connects and installation activities, identifying opportunities for improvement.

Cross-Connect

  • Execute data center cross-connect installations, terminations, modifications, and testing activities in accordance with established procedures.
  • Install and test a variety of cross-connect circuit types, including switched and multiplexed connections.
  • Ensure all cross-connect work is completed accurately and documented appropriately.

Testing / Troubleshooting

  • Perform Layer 1, Layer 2, and Layer 3 certification testing of customer and infrastructure connectivity.
  • Troubleshoot circuit, cabling, and connectivity issues using established diagnostic techniques and tools.
  • Escalate complex technical issues when required and support troubleshooting efforts through resolution.
  • Work directly with customers to diagnose issues and recommend appropriate solutions.

Stakeholder Partnership

  • Monitor inventory levels and proactively coordinate with appropriate teams to maintain required stock and materials.
  • Provide support for escalated work orders and assist with alarm dispatch activities.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to support operational activities and service delivery.
  • May provide backup support to site security operations when required.

Customer Management

  • Deliver timely, accurate, and high-quality execution of customer requests and service orders.
  • Provide an excellent customer experience through professional communication and responsive support.
  • Manage customer expectations regarding deployments, service requests, and infrastructure changes.
  • Support customer access control and escort services in accordance with site policies.
  • Serve as a point of contact for customer requests, exceptions, and escalations requiring experienced operational support.

Projects

  • Support customer and internal projects as assigned.
  • Coordinate vendors and stakeholders on data center-related projects and installation activities.
  • Perform quality assurance reviews of customer installations, deployments, and associated documentation.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance operational performance and customer experience.

Training

  • Complete all required training and certification requirements in a timely manner.
  • Support onboarding and knowledge-sharing activities for new team members.
  • May provide guidance and day-to-day support to junior engineers and technicians.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Typically requires a high school diploma, technical certification, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Typically requires 3–5 years of relevant experience in data center operations, telecommunications, IT infrastructure, customer operations, or a similar technical environment.

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Experience with data center infrastructure, structured cabling, and cross-connect installations.
  • Familiarity with network connectivity concepts and testing methodologies.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining attention to detail and operational accuracy.
  • Experience working in a mission-critical or 24x7 operational environment is preferred.

Work Requirements

  • Ability to complete hands-on tasks at height or in tight spaces.
  • Ability to work non-standard hours, including weekends, night shifts, holidays, and shift-based schedules as required to support 24x7 data center operations.
