Engineering beyond the code 

As AI, cloud and digital infrastructure become increasingly interconnected, engineers need to think beyond individual technologies and understand how their work creates value at scale.

Software engineer Anarane Tung describes her work in simple but powerful terms: “It’s essentially building the ‘digital floor plan’ for the world’s largest companies, connecting the experiences their customers, partners, and employees rely on every day” 

This requires engineers who can:

  • Translate complex, real-world business requirements into scalable systems.
  • Design for resilience across regions and infrastructure layers.
  • Understand how APIs, services and data connect across platforms.

“The bar is not just technical proficiency in isolation,” shares Hari C P, who leads tech hiring in APAC. “We're looking for engineers who can navigate ambiguity, influence decisions and partner with stakeholders to solve business problems. Strong candidates don't just build solutions; they help shape them.” 

Technical fundamentals remain important. Depending on the role and team, Equinix software engineers work across technologies such as Java, Python, Golang, JavaScript, APIs, cloud-native platforms, databases, and modern CI/CD environments.

For some full-stack roles, React and UI development experience is also part of the picture. But tools alone don’t differentiate candidates.  

Jessica Dosse, who leads tech hiring in the Americas and EMEA, explains: “The candidates who move forward are the ones who can apply fundamentals to new, evolving systems; work comfortably in distributed, global environments; and build for outcomes, not just implementation.” 
In practice, versatility and systems thinking matter more than depth in a single stack.  

Effective communication in a global work environment

As Anarane explains, this isn’t optional. “To thrive at Equinix, you need to be highly communicative and reliable.”

To recruiters, candidates who can demonstrate this, especially through past experience,  stand out quickly. 

What makes a strong resume? 

"Be thorough in everything you present, even a single line on your CV," says Rajeev Shastri, Director of AI Engineering. 

Recruiters also look for clear evidence of ownership, impact and problem-solving. If a project appears on a resume, candidates should be prepared to explain the decisions they made, the trade-offs they considered and the outcomes they achieved. Strong candidates can explain not only what they built, but why it mattered.
