The people behind HK6 - Delivering Equinix’s largest data centre in Hong Kong

jul 3 2026

Behind every milestone project at Equinix are the people who bring it to life. Yiming, Construction Project Management Manager, is one of those individuals. From delivering data centre expansions in Shanghai to taking on one of Equinix Hong Kong’s most significant builds, his journey reflects the growth, collaboration and ambition that define our teams.

Since moving from Shanghai to Hong Kong in 2023, Yiming has played a key role in delivering complex projects, including HK6, Equinix’s largest data center investment in Hong Kong. As we spoke with Yiming, he shares what made the HK6 journey meaningful, how teams came together to overcome challenges, and what this milestone represents for Equinix and the region, along with his own career journey across markets.

  1. What made working on HK6 in Hong Kong a meaningful and memorable experience for you as an Equinix employee?

One thing that struck me was our strong teamwork. To me, this is the most impressive point that comes to my mind.  We had different teams from everywhere. Seven external consultants, to 24 vendors, contractors, landlord, working with eight different government bodies, and Equinix internal stakeholders from different business unit that was involved in the project. Each of us contributed to the completion of Equinix Hong Kong largest data center.

2. How did your team come together to solve challenges, and how did you celebrate milestones during the HK6 build?

Even as the team faced several challenges that we had not encountered while building previous Equinix Hong Kong data centres, the close cooperation and mutual support within the project team stood out as particularly memorable. The encouragement we gave one another carried us through more than a couple of weeks of overtime during the final testing and commissioning stage. We also captured moments of celebration along the way. With photos taken on site and the entire team coming together each time a milestone was achieved, creating lasting memories of what we accomplished together.

3. From your perspective, what does the launch of HK6 in Hong Kong represent for Equinix?

The launch of HK6 represents a significant milestone for Equinix in Hong Kong. It is our largest investment in an IBX in the market, with more than US$124 million committed to Phase 1.

HK6 is also the first IBX in Hong Kong where Equinix partnered with a lead contractor, completing 19 months of construction with 77,000 workers delivering over 730,000 hours of work.

From a technology perspective, HK6 is our first IBX in Hong Kong, designed to be liquid-cooling-ready from day one, supporting the evolving needs of our customers. For the Global Design and Construction team, HK6 reflects more than 30 months of dedication, from initial design through to Ready for Service. Phase 1 of HK6 delivers 900 cabinets across six data halls, bringing the total capacity to more than 3,000.  This reinforces our ability to support continued digital growth in the region.

4. A little more about your journey at Equinix – Yiming, we understand you’ve transitioned from Shanghai to Hong Kong through an internal job opportunity. How did you navigate this internal transfer?

After joining Equinix China in 2019, I delivered two phases of expansion at the SH6 data center.

In 2023, I was given the opportunity to transfer to Equinix Hong Kong. It was an exciting step for me to explore a new market in a different location, working with a new team, in a different language and with a different working style. My first project in Hong Kong was HK1-13B, an expansion on the 25th floor of the HK1 data centre.

At the beginning, it was a challenge working with all new stakeholders. However, the Equinix Hong Kong team supported me every step of the way. They were always willing to help and took the time to explain things whenever I needed more clarity. We successfully brought HK1-13B to ready for service two months ahead of the contractual timeline.

This experience gave me valuable confidence and prepared me to take on a larger project, HK6-1, in 2024. Collaboration across such a wide team was essential, and without it, it would not have been possible to bring the new data center live and achieve ready for service on 30 March 2026.
