Summary

The Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for supporting the design, operation, maintenance, reliability, and continuous improvement of critical electrical infrastructure within Equinix data centers. This role provides technical leadership for electrical systems, supports operational excellence, reviews critical procedures, leads incident investigations, and collaborates with operations, engineering, construction, and vendor teams to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient data center operations.

Responsibilities

  • Review and approve MOPs, SOPs, and EOPs for critical electrical activities, ensuring technical accuracy, safety compliance, sequencing, redundancy protection, and operational readiness.

  • Evaluate maintenance activities and operational changes for impact on system redundancy and business continuity.

  • Provide subject matter expertise for critical electrical switching activities, including utility transfers, generator operations, UPS maintenance bypasses, STS operations, and MV/LV distribution systems.

  • Serve as the primary electrical escalation point for operational issues, planned maintenance activities, troubleshooting, and non-routine events.

  • Support commissioning activities, integrated systems testing, and maintenance validation in accordance with applicable standards and manufacturer requirements.

  • Lead root cause analyses for electrical incidents, near misses, and system anomalies, and drive corrective and preventive actions.

  • Analyze EPMS, DCIM, and power quality data to identify reliability risks, trends, and improvement opportunities.

  • Support capacity planning efforts and collaborate with site engineering and operations teams to optimize infrastructure performance.

  • Promote and enforce safe work practices, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), arc flash safety, and other electrical safety requirements.

  • Mentor and develop junior engineers and technical team members.

  • Coordinate and direct external vendors, contractors, consultants, and project stakeholders.

  • Contribute to the development, review, implementation, and continuous improvement of engineering policies, standards, and procedures.

  • Lead or support engineering initiatives, projects, and operational improvements across data center facilities.

  • Provide technical documentation, reports, and communications for cross-functional teams and leadership stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

  • Extensive professional experience in electrical system design, operations, maintenance, and project delivery within data center, mission-critical, industrial, utility, or similar critical infrastructure environments.

  • Advanced knowledge of electrical distribution systems, including UPS systems, generators, switchgear, utility interfaces, MV/LV distribution, and critical power infrastructure.

  • Demonstrated experience reviewing and approving operational procedures such as MOPs, SOPs, and EOPs.

  • Experience conducting root cause analysis and implementing corrective and preventive actions for electrical incidents and system events.

  • Knowledge of electrical safety practices, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), arc flash controls, and applicable health and safety standards.

  • Experience supporting commissioning, integrated systems testing, maintenance validation, or related operational readiness activities.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively across operations, engineering, construction, and vendor organizations.

  • Strong technical documentation, communication, and problem-solving capabilities.

  • Ability to mentor technical team members and provide subject matter expertise on electrical systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in hyperscale, colocation, or other mission-critical data center environments.

  • Proficiency with EPMS, DCIM, or comparable infrastructure monitoring and analytics platforms.

  • Strong knowledge of capacity planning, infrastructure optimization, and site improvement initiatives.

  • Proven ability to lead engineering projects, operational improvement programs, and cross-functional technical initiatives.

  • Capability to develop and deliver technical training, workshops, and engineering knowledge-sharing sessions.

  • Familiarity with vendor management, service provider oversight, contracts, and scopes of work.

Work Model

Hybrid work model: 2 days per week in IBX (Data Center), with the remaining days working remotely.
