We had the privilege of speaking with Carol Wang, Sales Director for Equinix Malaysia, to gain insight to her remarkable career journey, aspirations, and valuable advice for individuals seeking to elevate their sales careers. You have been in sales for over 20 years. What do you love about sales?
Carol: As an introvert, I never imagined myself as a salesperson, but in my inaugural sales role, I discovered a genuine enjoyment in engaging with diverse individuals. Often, these interactions not only brought me joy but also became valuable learning experiences. You must love the job to stay in the job. Many of my customers and partners have also become my friends and mentors. Furthermore, I find adrenaline in driving new opportunities for businesses and managing customer business priorities.

What has enabled you to advance your career in sales?
Carol: It is important to have a career-building mindset—refrain from viewing any role as just a job. Early in my career journey, I diligently crafted my career path, actively seeking opportunities to broaden my knowledge and experience within the tech industry ecosystem. This entailed learning about new technologies, honing customer relationship management skills, and fostering business partnerships. I love the technology industry because technologies advance so rapidly. Embracing this dynamic environment, I eagerly seized opportunities to glean wisdom from peers and managers worldwide, all of whom served as inspirations for my personal growth. Cultivating a network of mentors proved invaluable in navigating my career trajectory, offering helpful guidance on sales leadership, professional development and new avenues for advancement.

Moreover, I established a clear timeline for progressing through different sales positions, ultimately aiming for leadership roles. This strategic approach not only provided direction but also fuelled my drive for continuous improvement and achievement

What are some key attributes required for a successful sales career?
Carol: Resilience, adaptability and a relentless drive for learning and self-improvement are indispensable qualities in the sales industry. Moreover, for individuals transitioning from individual contributor roles to managerial positions, possessing problem-solving skills and a strong collaborative spirit is paramount. Establishing oneself as a trusted and respected leader among team members hinges upon the ability to effectively tackle challenges and foster a culture of teamwork and cooperation.

How do you set your team up for success in achieving sales targets and deepening their professional development?
Carol: I make it a priority to personally connect with each team member, actively engaging with them on the frontline to offer my expertise in problem solving, all aimed at delivering tangible, outcome-based results and driving towards our common goals. I believe that this hands-on approach fosters a positive and productive work environment, emphasizing the importance of model leadership and seamless coordination to meet sales objectives. 

Collaboratively, we craft personalized development plans tailored to individual team members, integrating discussions on career aspirations into performance reviews. Through this process, we identify actionable steps to empower them in achieving their professional goals while working towards our shared objectives.
