Principal Open-Source Program Manager

Job Summary

The Office of the CTO (OCTO) within Equinix is chartered with driving technology innovation; technology roadmap & architecture; and thought leadership with a focus on building a closer engagement with the open-source and software developer communities. 

We are launching the Equinix Open-Source Program Office (OSPO), homed within the OCTO organization, to accelerate the adoption of open-source software internally and expand contributions and active engagements in developer communities by Equinix’s engineering teams.  

We are looking for a “Principal Open-Source Program Manager” to lead the newly-created OSPO function in close collaboration with key stakeholders and engineering teams across the company. This role reports directly to the Chief Technology Officer at Equinix.  

As Principal Open-Source Program Manager, you will have the opportunity to help develop a company-wide framework to drive and coordinate various open-source-related initiatives; serve as an advisor and thought leader to the technical community at Equinix on questions related to open source; and closely interact with the external developer communities, such as the Linux Foundation.

Responsibilities

The Equinix Open-Source Program Office (OSPO) is responsible (directly or indirectly) for the following: 

  • Inbound open source (use of external open-source projects): Manage policies and license compliance, collaborate with engineering, InfoSec and release teams. Manage relationships with open-source tool vendors

  • Outbound open source (release and management of internal open-source projects): Manage public projects on GitHub, and collaborate closely with internal stakeholders, including Developer Relations, Legal, Engineering and Product

  • Open-source funding: Support the funding process for internal and external open-source initiatives

  • Promotion of open-source mindset and practices internally: Train developers on open-source policies and practices. Develop and provide introduction content for new-hire onboarding

  • External collaboration: Maintain relationships with open-source practitioners at external organizations, including the TODO Group, the Linux Foundation, CHAOSS and OSSF

  • Other: Develop and publish metrics on open-source contributions. Work with Marketing to publicize open-source activities. Manage GitHub permissions, access, and settings

Qualifications

  • Preferably, a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related engineering field

  • Proven years of relevant technology, software engineering and/or open-source experience, including within at least one technology domain across the infrastructure stack. Proven years' experience is preferred

  • Experience with open technologies, cloud-native ecosystems, and open-source & developer communities such as the Linux Foundation

  • Experience developing code deployed in large-scale infrastructures. Experience examples include infrastructure engineering, DevOps, tooling/product/API development, open-source contributions, etc.   

  • Solid technical understanding of distributed infrastructure and hybrid, multi-cloud architectures (engineering/operations experience a bonus)

  • Excellent writing and verbal communications skills from engineering to executive

  • Excellent collaboration and people skills

Responsabilités

  • Collaboration externe : Maintien des rapports avec les professionnels open source d’autres organisations, comme le Groupe TODO, la Fondation Linux, CHAOSS et l’OSSF.
  • Autres : Compilation et publication de données sur les contributions open source. Collaboration avec le Marketing pour publiciser les activités open source. Gestion des permissions, accès et paramètres sur GitHub.

 

Qualités requises

  • Idéalement, un baccalauréat en informatique ou dans un domaine de l’ingénierie connexe.
  • Plusieurs années d’expérience pertinente démontrées en technologies, en conception logicielle ou en logiciels open source, dont dans au moins un domaine technique pertinent à la pile technologique. Une préférence est accordée aux années d’expérience démontrées.
  • Expérience avec les technologies ouvertes, les écosystèmes cloud-native et les communautés open source et de développeurs, comme la Fondation Linux.
  • Expérience en conception de programmes déployés dans des infrastructures de grande échelle, par exemple en ingénierie d’infrastructure, en processus de développement et d’exploitation, en développement d’outils, de produits ou d’interfaces de programmation d’application (API) ou en contributions open source.   
  • Compréhension technique robuste de l’infrastructure distribuée et de l’architecture hybride multicloud (expérience en ingénierie et en opérations un atout).
  • Excellentes compétences en communication technique et administrative écrite et verbale.
  • Excellentes compétences interpersonnelles et de collaboration.
