Job Summary

The Senior Manager, Onsite Power Generation will lead the commercial evaluation of onsite and co-sited power generation opportunities across Equinix’s data center portfolio. This role will identify, diligence, structure, and negotiate agreements for generation solutions that may include fuel cells, natural gas generators, gas turbines, reciprocating engines, battery energy storage systems, long-duration energy storage, demand response resources, and other distributed energy technologies.

Success in this role requires a rare combination of deep technical fluency, commercial judgment, contract negotiation experience, and interpersonal credibility. The Senior Manager must be able to evaluate whether a technology is viable for a mission-critical data center environment, develop a commercial structure that appropriately allocates risk, negotiate effectively with vendors and developers, and coordinate across Global Design & Construction, Site Operations, Capacity Management, Energy and other internal stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Opportunity origination and screening: Identify, evaluate, and prioritize onsite, co-sited, and distributed generation opportunities that can support Equinix capacity, resiliency, cost, sustainability, or bridge-power objectives

  • Transaction structuring: Develop commercial structures for PPAs, tolling arrangements, capacity agreements, leases, and other transaction types that fit the technical use case and risk profile

  • Vendor and developer negotiations: Serve as the primary commercial interface with vendors, developers, IPPs, OEMs, and other external partners from opportunity development through execution

  • Risk allocation and governance: Partner with Legal and internal stakeholders to negotiate contract protections, including availability guarantees, liquidated damages, credit support, performance security, termination rights, change-in-law treatment, outage remedies, milestone obligations, and handoff requirements

  • Business case development: Build and pressure-test commercial analysis, including energy cost, capacity value, non-energy costs, incentives, environmental attributes, fuel costs, standby charges, and customer / revenue impacts

  • Execution handoff: Partner with the Energy Asset Management team after agreement execution to ensure vendor obligations, operational assumptions, performance metrics, and issue-escalation pathways are clearly documented and transitioned

  • Market and technology strategy: Maintain a point of view on emerging onsite generation technologies, vendor capabilities, and opportunities to standardize repeatable commercial frameworks

  • Executive communication: Prepare clear recommendations and decision materials for senior leadership, translating complex technical, commercial, regulatory, and operational issues into practical business decisions

Qualifications

  • Typically 8+ years of experience in energy project development, power generation, distributed energy resources, energy origination, utility / IPP business development, power procurement, engineering, or related infrastructure fields

  • Deep technical understanding of onsite power generation technologies such as fuel cells, natural gas generators, gas turbines, reciprocating engines, battery energy storage systems, long-duration energy storage, demand response resources, and other distributed energy technologies

  • Experience evaluating, structuring, and negotiating complex energy or infrastructure agreements, such as PPAs, tolling agreements, and capacity agreements

  • Strong commercial judgment with the ability to translate technical requirements into risk allocation, pricing structures, contract protections, and executive-level recommendations

  • Proven ability to manage strategic vendor, developer, IPP, OEM, utility, consultant, and internal stakeholder relationships with credibility and professionalism

  • Experience working cross-functionally with engineering, construction, operations, legal, finance, procurement, and/or sustainability teams in complex project environments

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to simplify complex technical and commercial issues for senior audiences

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in data centers or mission-critical infrastructure

  • Engineering background or demonstrated technical operating experience with power generation, electrical infrastructure, microgrids, thermal systems, controls, emissions, or fuel supply

  • Familiarity with utility interconnection, standby service, capacity markets, behind-the-meter generation, environmental permitting, air emissions, fuel procurement, and commercial operation requirements
