Empowering Human Resources at Equinix

In the latest installment of Equinix's "Leaders at Equinix: Empower, Elevate, & Evolve" interview series, we had the privilege of speaking with Jennifer Yates, Chief of Staff for Global HR Org and Talent. Let's learn more as Jennifer shares valuable insights into her leadership journey!

According to Jennifer, the hardest leadership lesson she learned was "understanding the importance of the human element in every decision and action." She realized that leading a team goes beyond setting goals and achieving targets. It involves truly understanding and empathizing with the people she leads. Jennifer emphasizes, "Each team member is unique, with their own strengths, challenges, and motivations. It's crucial to connect with them on a personal level, to listen to their concerns, and to support their growth and development." She believes that building relationships and trust with her team members ultimately leads to better collaboration, higher morale, and greater success.

"The Last Lecture"

When asked about the most valuable book she has learned from, Jennifer mentions "The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch. She explains that although it is not specifically focused on leadership, the book serves as a guide for life. Jennifer shares, "It's about putting life events into perspective."

"My favorite section of the book and words I live by are, 'Would I (or anyone in my family) be eaten by wolves?' It’s a metaphor for 'What's the worst that could happen?' It’s highly unlikely I will ever be eaten by wolves, therefore whatever comes next is usually fixable." She finds inspiration in Pausch's perspective and his emphasis on overcoming obstacles, enabling the dreams of others, and seizing every moment.

Leadership Style

According to Jennifer, "My team would definitely recognize my 'Guardian' characteristics." She prioritizes creating a supportive work environment where employees feel appreciated and acts as their advocate. Collaboration and cooperation are essential to her, as she values building strong relationships as a team player. Additionally, Jennifer's attention to detail ensures efficient processes and smooth operations.

When asked about what she wants to be remembered for as a leader, Jennifer states, "No one was eaten by wolves under my watch." Jennifer aspires to be remembered for her authenticity and advocacy, striving to create a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued, heard, and empowered.
