About the Role
Reporting to the EVP, Global General Counsel, the newly created VP, Legal, Global Contracts will oversee a 70-person legal team responsible for all commercially based deal negotiations for global sales and specialized sales motions, as well as supplier contracting. The ideal candidate will have experience leading global legal teams and have the confidence to earn trust from internal clients to represent them when leading complex, strategic deals. This role will be responsible for overseeing a variety of critical legal services that have significant impact to the business and requires an innovative mindset to leveraging technology to better scale the organization. This role will be a trusted legal advisor to our most senior executives, but must also possess the ability to understand processes and operational needs of the department. As this role develops it will be responsible for creating synergy between different contracting functions and creating an environment of best practice sharing.
Areas of Accountability
Lead the vision and strategy for growing, operationalizing, and managing the Commercial Contracts and Vendor Contracts practice areas.
Drive the development of strategic plans that realize the group’s long-term vision of organizational success and targets long-term sub-functional goals.
Proactively anticipate and respond to industry and market changes and challenges by understanding the evolving global landscape and the characteristics, issues, and factors influencing them.
Business and Legal Outcomes
Develop in-depth knowledge and understanding across all business lines, markets, products, customers, competitors and regulatory environment, to identify trends, stay abreast of material developments, and provide decisive legal/commercial advice to the businesses on emerging opportunities and risks from a commercial perspective.
Develop actionable risk assessments and policies to balance customer and Equinix needs.
Partner cross-functionally to solve business challenges related to commercial contracting.
Collaborate with members of the commercial contracts, supplier & products legal team and other focus teams on process and contracting improvements to create consistencies.
Highly visible and trusted partner to the business, ensuring the legal team is at the forefront of strategic initiatives and large-scale commercial transactions.
Manage the commercial legal aspects of integrating acquired businesses into the organization.
Balance risks, exercise judgment, take decisive action to execute complex and high impact customer deals.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate competency and experience in the following areas.
10+ years of legal experience at the executive level, with at least 5 years as a business partner in an evolving global technology organization.
Experience leading an organization through an enterprise-wide transformation.
Experience with contract management, mergers & acquisitions, integrations, and executing global legal programs.
Experience driving closure on deals ranging from $1 to $100’s of millions of dollars in contract value.
Experience operationalizing legal technology to drive scale in the team.
Capable of standardizing global policies while translating for local complexities.
Adept at balancing intense short-term pressures with overall long-term goals.
Ability to unite teams and instill a sense of shared ownership around planning initiatives, designating priorities, and behavior change for the good of the team.
Confidence to being decisive when faced with ambiguity.
Focused on relationships, execution and results.
Establish high standards for performance, goal setting, strategic planning, follow through, and holding people accountable for results.
