Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Spatial/Geospatial Software Engineer with expertise in GIS technologies, Java backend development, cloud platforms, and microservices architecture. The ideal candidate will design and develop scalable geospatial solutions, integrate spatial data services, and ensure robust backend systems that power advanced mapping and location-based applications.
Responsibilities
Requirements Analysis
Review and analyze geospatial and business requirements, ensuring feasibility within time and cost constraints
Engage in requirement definition meetings and provide technical feedback on spatial data workflows
Software/Application Architecture
Lead and participate in architectural reviews for geospatial systems and services
Design cloud-native, microservices-based architectures for spatial data processing and visualization
Define strategies for GIS data integration across multiple platforms
Software Design
Design solutions for large-scale geospatial enhancements and cross-functional integrations
Architect high-performance spatial data pipelines for ingestion, transformation, and visualization
Conduct design reviews and provide technical leadership for spatial data workflows
Development/Coding
Develop and maintain Java-based backend services for geospatial applications
Implement APIs for spatial data access, transformation, and visualization
Optimize spatial queries and indexing for performance
Ensure adherence to coding standards and propose improvements
Conduct performance tuning for GIS data processing and backend services
Application QA
Develop unit and integration tests for geospatial components
Design automated test scripts for spatial data validation and backend services
DevOps
Define automation strategies for geospatial deployments
Drive infrastructure requirements for cloud-based GIS services
Review release planning and ensure quality deployments
Software Reliability & Support
Manage operational SLAs for geospatial services
Debug and resolve L2 & L3 incidents related to spatial data processing
Reporting
Provide status updates on geospatial development tasks and releases
Technical Project Management
Estimate level of effort (LOE) for geospatial projects
Plan and manage development tasks for large-scale spatial enhancements
Qualifications
7+ years of experience in software engineering with a focus on geospatial technologies
Strong proficiency in Java backend development
Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and microservices architecture
Expertise in GIS and geospatial technologies, including: Spatial databases: PostGIS, Oracle Spatial, SQL Server Spatial GIS frameworks/libraries: GeoTools, GDAL/OGR, JTS Topology Suite Mapping platforms: ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS, OpenLayers, Leaflet Coordinate systems and projections: EPSG codes, datum transformations
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field
Preferred Skills
Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
Knowledge of RESTful APIs, GraphQL, and OGC standards (WMS, WFS, WMTS)
Expertise in spatial indexing and optimization (R-Tree, QuadTree)
Familiarity with big data frameworks for spatial processing (Apache Spark with GeoSpark/GeoMesa)
Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
Exposure to cloud-native geospatial services (AWS Location Service, Google Maps APIs, Azure Maps)
Strong problem-solving and performance tuning skills for spatial queries
Experience with distributed systems and event-driven architectures
Knowledge of geospatial analytics, routing algorithms, and network analysis
The targeted pay range for this position in the following location is / locations are:
Canada - Toronto Office TRO : 131,000 - 181,000 CAD / Annual
Our pay ranges reflect the minimum and maximum target for new hire pay for the full-time position determined by role, level, and location.The pay range shown is based on our compensation structure in place at the time of posting and may be updated periodically based on business needs. Individual pay is based on additional factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education and/or training.
The targeted pay range listed reflects the base pay only and does not include bonus, equity, or benefits. Employees are eligible for bonus, and equity may be offered depending on the position.
