Mentors engineers within the regional engineering, design, construction and site operations job families. Performs the planning, system design, system implementation, system maintenance and support. Leads medium to large scale projects and the roll out of engineering initiatives. Develops and implements policies and procedures. Effectively interacts with other internal and external teams, including the design engineering, site engineering, construction management and regional operations teams, onsite support vendors and consultants on projects, policies and procedures. Plans and directs day to day operations and strategic direction of delivery of either multiple, large construction projects or delivery of operations for an IBX portfolio.
Maintain globally consistent MEP engineering policies and procedures to support day to day IBX operations, including emergency response, customer installs/de-installs, incident management, routine maintenance, etc. Collaborate with regional operations and engineering teams in the standards development process.
Provide subject matter expertise and technical support to operations and engineering teams across all three regions.
Perform evaluations and testing on MEP equipment and processes to ensure a high level of resiliency is maintained at the IBX facilities. Document deficiencies in a report along with detailed and actionable corrective recommendations to remedy problems found.
Troubleshoot, determine root cause, and document all infrastructure faults and failures. Assemble a summary report describing the event, investigation details, root cause determination, and action items. Follow-up on all pending action items until complete.
Assemble Engineering Bulletins and Briefs as required.
Participate in Operations Crisis Bridge calls as required.
Manage key vendors on behalf of Operations which may involve; leading routine meetings, technical problem resolution or dealing with a vendor performance issue.
Provide technical support to Operations during the scoping and execution of local site Capex projects ensuring that new equipment meets Equinix specifications and installation is carried out without affecting the live data center operations.
Develop and deliver technical training sessions to other teams globally (Operations, Sales, Design Engineering, etc.) via Equinix Learning Exchange, screen sharing or in-person.
Share on-call duties with other team members to support a global footprint.
Travel as needed to effectively interact with company regional and department leaders on a global basis.
Present technical information to internal and external customers clearly and accurately with a level of detail that is appropriate for the recipient.
Work closely with operations and engineering teams across all three regions to assure consistency is achieved regarding design and operating/maintenance strategy.
Review design details and equipment selection for new builds/expansions to ensure compliance with Global Design Standards and Equinix operations requirements.
Support Design/Construction with factory and site visits throughout the life of a project as needed. Prepare a summary report detailing trip details and our contribution to the project.
Participate (or lead) due diligence efforts for equipment that is new to our IBX infrastructure and assemble a summary report.

Develop and maintain globally consistent design standards and specifications as required.
Implement and manage processes to assure quality control during design and construction phase of projects.
Lead design decision-making in a manner that supports the reliability/availability objectives for the IBXs.
Oversee the commissioning and integrated systems testing of all of the MEP equipment and systems for new and retrofitted IBXs across all three regions.
Look for opportunities for sites to implement energy saving initiatives through operating/control modifications or equipment upgrades.
Ensure "as-built" documentation is accurate & maintained.
Develop capital project budgets & justification as required.
Travel and other assignments as required. Up to 25% travel, including international.
Leads and manages multiple projects or other design and engineering initiatives.
Provides guidance, technical expertise and project leadership in ensuring projects or other design and engineering initiatives are meeting or exceeding company expectations.
System Operation and Work Practices (including Capacity Planning)
Expert operating knowledge of engineering systems to include advanced diagnostics and repairs.
Ability to apply knowledge of Equinix processes and procedures and industry standards to resolve non-routine issues.
Works with vendors to identify and resolve hardware and software issues with vendors products which affect Equinix operations (i.e., works with equipment vendors to understand the impacts and consequential workarounds of an equipment setting change based on its hardware design and the site configuration of the equipment).
Evaluates and assures the safe working practices of others.
Reviews and recommends work practice guidelines and policies.
Interacts with other engineering, design and construction disciplines.
Works with the capacity and site engineering teams to formulate long term strategies for managing power and cooling resources.
Contributes to identifying and developing training programs.
Provides cross-functional training.
Acquires knowledge by expanding experience with systems, vendor training, participation in industry groups or meetings and shadowing others.
Is SME with many systems and trains others inside and outside of the group.
Contributes to developing and executing effective contract administration procedures including generation, review, and monitoring of contracts, change orders, cost forecasts, and other pertinent documents and documentation.
Leadership and Communications (including Vendor Mgmt.)
Mentors junior team members. Directs all internal and external project team members.
Directs external vendors per project or initiative such as general contractors, A&E design teams, commissioning agents, equipment suppliers, etc. ·Significantly contributes to establishing and maintaining high value relationships.
Provides executive level communication including business requirements documents and advanced technical writing.
Communicates Equinix operations decisions to customers and conducts post incident communications with customers.
Predominantly peer-to-peer communication.
Policy & Procedure Development and Adherence
Significantly contributes to creating and maintaining best in class policies and procedures.
Assures adherence to developed standards and policy through review of documentation, participation in commissioning activities, design summits and IBX physicals.
Develops high level reporting / summaries of policy compliance information.
Consistently solves complex, cross-functional issues requiring independent action and a high degree of initiative to resolve (i.e., works with local ops team to perform root cause analysis for complex incident, proposes solutions and works out implications to issues and produce lessons learnt for future reference).
Makes recommendations for system level enhancements to eliminate potential problems.
Tests suitability of components or action plans for deployments.
Has an expert level system knowledge.
Is a subject matter expert to others in and outside of the group. Extensive knowledge of multiple facets of the relevant engineering discipline.
Develops and executes projects (i.e., a single go-to person for specific topic/system, mentors internally and externally on the system/topic regionally, leads projects regionally pertaining to the subject matter).
Reviews budget and scope, calculates savings pertaining to system improvement projects.
Leads internal and/or external engineering, design or construction related seminars/conferences.
5+ years in mechanical system design, operations, maintenance, and project planning with emphasis on datacenter or mission critical project delivery.
Solid “hands on” knowledge and field experience with the operation and maintenance of HVAC, mechanical and refrigeration, electrical and controls systems...
Proficiency in troubleshooting complex problems and facilitating Root Cause Analyses.
Comprehensive understanding & application of Efficiency and Reliability Engineering principles.
Working knowledge of industry standards, building codes and safety standards including OSHA, NFPA, ASHRAE, SMACNA, UBC, UPC, UMC, ASME.
Must have effective written and verbal communications skills.
Proficient with Excel, Auto-Cad (or Visio), and project scheduling programs.
Strong people skills.
