Job Summary

The Capacity Engineer SME is a resource for the Capacity Engineering team. A data center infrastructure subject matter expert (SME) proficient in assessing mechanical and electrical plant designs and capacities. 

Responsibilities

Space Planning & Design

  • Assessing existing and to be build data center designs in order to determine design limitations for all colocation spaces and infrastructure topology levels

  • Partners with capacity engineers (CE) to act as SME for load fail-over analysis

  • Assists with customer behavior modeling and tool development·

  • A subject matter expert (SME) of complex and unique Cage-Cabinet design options that respond to customer requirements, Equinix requirements and physical site constraints, as well as finding design solutions for issues that have escalated to a high management level

  • Provides and validates test-fits for new data center developments for unique solutioning

  • Maximizes space utilization to develop the best expert design solutions for the data center and the customer

  • Prepares notional Cage-Cabinet layouts, area calculations and diagrams for each individual data center and those sites that require Senior SME level requiring broad solutioning support                                  

  • Acts as a mentor in solving complex unique space planning issues 

Engineering

  • SME of electrical/mechanical infrastructure to notionally attribute unique Cage-Cabinet designs against data center infrastructure within a broad ranged scope

  • Prepare and performs high-density review cases engaging with other SME's or local sites where required

  • Performs the validation and updating of data center infrastructure data within capacity systems.

  • Identifies unique issues or constraints in infrastructure capacity and prepares notional solutions for review by management

  • Acts as a mentor to Supervisor, Capacity Management and below to solve complex engineering issues

Stakeholder Management

  • Awareness of key stakeholders across functional areas, and is able to map out stakeholder lists

  • With guidance able to identify the needs of stakeholders to keep them informed

  • Responsible for overall capacity reporting and validation of capacity utilization reports

Problem Solving

  • Solves complex, cross-functional issues with business implications that span multiple groups

  • Used broad expert knowledge of skills to identify and understands underlying issues

  • Takes the lead to solve complex issues with business leads and mitigate the risks

Data & Drawing Management

  • Works with site operations in discrepancy of documentations of added infrastructure in facilities and any special / complex installation of customer cages

  • Ensures that AutoCAD drawings represent what is installed at the site

  • Leads site teams to ensure data and CAD drawings accurately reflect the site installations

  • Leads the investigation of complex data issues without support

  • Can deal with complex data errors for complex installations and involves Business Leads to mitigate risks and to solve Equinix most critical data errors

  • Leads/coaches others to solve special/complex Drawing Management issues

Communications

  • Communicates with a broader group of stakeholders beyond the capacity team

  • The communication tools and templates used (i.e. emails, status reports) require approval and feedback from more senior colleagues

  • Ability to present technical discoveries and operational needs to business level stakeholders.

  • Acts as a SME and provides direction to entry and intermediate planners as required to analyze and resolve out-of-process technical problems

Capacity Feasibility, Optimization and Risk Management

  • Make recommendations to data center business owners to optimize data center efficiency and utilization for complex solutioning

  • Proactively leads the data center business to solve unique problems

  • Captures a list of project risks, issues, assumptions and dependencies for their project

  • May require support to manage risks effectively

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise in data center infrastructure, typically 10+ years experience

  • Demonstrated proficiency in assessing mechanical and electrical plant designs and capacities

  • proficient in assessing mechanical and electrical plant designs and capacities. 

  • Preference will be given to candidates who have previously held data center capacity engineering positions

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related engineering discipline preferred

The targeted pay range for this position in the following location is / locations are:

United States - Dallas Infomart Office DAI : 136,000 - 204,000 USD / Annual

Canada - Toronto Office TRO : 131,000 - 181,000 CAD / Annual

Our pay ranges reflect the minimum and maximum target for new hire pay for the full-time position determined by role, level, and location.The pay range shown is based on our compensation structure in place at the time of posting and may be updated periodically based on business needs. Individual pay is based on additional factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education and/or training.

The targeted pay range listed reflects the base pay only and does not include bonus, equity, or benefits. Employees are eligible for bonus, and equity may be offered depending on the position.
