Job Summary: 

At Equinix our Critical Facilities Engineers operate, manage, maintain and repair critical and non-critical Power systems, HVAC, plumbing, fire control and suppression, and all site services, and performs all related vendor support in a mission critical environment.   

This role supports the overall functioning of the Data Center by focusing on maintaining and improving the facility’s critical infrastructure. This includes all regularly scheduled maintenance and ad hoc repairs/troubleshooting.  

The role will be based at a static site in Silverwater and the position would suit an experienced Controls engineer with a HVAC/Mechanical Trade or Degree qualification. Whilst industry experience is ideal but not mandatory, an industrial and/or mission critical background and experience working in live operational sites will be highly regarded.  We have a broad and diverse engineering team who work across disciplines, and all engineers work across all engineering disciplines. (Electrical/Mechanical/Controls) 

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced with strong experience in automation controls, ideally with a mechanical/HVAC background. The suitable candidate will be responsible for ensuring the efficient and reliable operation of critical infrastructure systems, including power, BMS (Building Management System), cooling, and environmental controls. This role requires expertise in troubleshooting, maintenance, and optimization of complex mechanical and electrical systems in a mission-critical environment.  

 

Key responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for technical repairs on mission-critical data center systems requiring sophisticated analytical problem-solving techniques to identify root cause. 

  • Oversees the site maintenance and upkeep of Data center infrastructures according to Equinix global standards. 

  • Actions, triages or escalates site activity in relation to all relevant building automation systems (BAS) and controls, such as BMS, SCADA, PLC, BACnet & IP Protocols. 

  • Monitor and optimize system performance, identify potential issues, and implement proactive measures to prevent downtime and maximize efficiency (PUE/WUE). 

  • Ensures that all Equinix safety standards are followed. 

  • Perform daily checks and site inspections of the building and clearance of alarms 

  • Coordinate and lead preventative maintenance, task, vendors, lead repairs and corrective maintenance 

  • Coordinate and perform critical switching activities 

  • Maintain workplace safety practices (zero worktime lost) and alignment to approved MOP’s 

  • Ensure incidents are escalated and handled according to protocols 

  • Review and validate design criteria for new principal controls upgrades and installs. 

  • Develops training and supports training of other IBX (International Business Exchange) employees in relevant engineering topics and processes. 

  • 1st point of contact for dealing with SY6 control issues and be the site interface to the AU-controls team. 

 

Qualifications, key skills and attributes: 

  • Excellent understanding through practical experience of critical facility operations, with a focus on automation controls. 

  • Strong knowledge of electrical distribution systems, HVAC systems, and environmental controls. 

  • Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing complex mechanical and electrical systems. 

  • Experience with building automation systems (BAS) and controls, such as BMS, SCADA, PLC, BACnet & IP Protocols. 

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure in time-sensitive situations. 

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. 

  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize workload effectively.
