Job summary: 

We are seeking a highly capable Mechanical Engineer to support and enhance mechanical and HVAC performance across our Australian and Philippines data center portfolio. While the preferred location is Sydney, due to current delivery workload we will consider strong candidates based in Melbourne. 

 

You’ll bring a calm, positive temperament and the ability to provide clear direction when needed—while remaining highly collaborative and able to work autonomously to drive outcomes. We’re open to candidates from data centers / mission-critical environments, as well as adjacent industries such as marine engineering and manufacturing, where strong operational discipline and engineering judgement translate well. 

The position is critical in providing operational support across our entire data center portfolio and we are looking to review and speak with candidates immediately.  

 

Key Responsibilities: 

• Lead and support Design & Construction including RIBA reviews, support PMO-led projects, including major design and engineering initiatives.   

• Review, design, and support mechanical replacement programs across Australian sites in partnership with the internal PMO.   

• Provide technical leadership and direction to onsite critical facilities engineering teams to ensure operational policy and design standards are maintained.     

• Take a leading role supporting Engineering Change Management, promoting Operational Resiliency and Energy Efficiency.   

• Attend sites to support project scoping, commissioning, and handover activities.   

 

System Operation and Work Practices (incl. Capacity Planning) 

• Apply expert-level operational knowledge of engineering systems, including advanced fault diagnosis and rectification.   

• Resolve complex, non-routine issues by applying Equinix processes, procedures, and industry best practice.   

• Assess and promote safe working practices, including reviewing work performed by others where required.   

• Collaborate with engineering, design, and construction stakeholders across disciplines.   

• Partner with capacity and site critical facility engineering teams to address power and cooling constraints and optimize infrastructure utilization.  

 

 

Training 

• Support the identification and development of targeted training programs for onsite critical facility engineering teams   

• Continuously expand technical capability through hands-on experience, vendor training, industry participation, and peer shadowing   

• Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) across multiple systems, providing coaching and technical training both within and beyond the team   

 

Contract Administration 

• Manage effective contract administration activities, including contract generation, review, change management, cost forecasting, and documentation.   

• Provide monthly contract updates and proactively address areas requiring additional support or intervention.   

• Ensure accuracy and transparency of data within Maximo, job plans, and mechanically related corrective maintenance activities.   

 

Leadership and Communications  

• Provide engineering leadership and mentorship to critical facility engineering teams across all data centers.   

• Maintain clear, timely communication with internal stakeholders and external project partners.   

• Direct and manage external vendors as required, including contractors, A&E design consultants, commissioning agents, and equipment suppliers.  

• Contribute to cross-functional SOP development and high-quality technical documentation.   

• Communicate effectively at all levels, including executive stakeholders, using standardized reporting and presentation formats.   

 

Policy & Procedure Development and Adherence 

• Participate in the review, development, and continuous improvement of engineering policies and procedures.   

• Lead the creation of policy documentation in collaboration with key stakeholders.   

• Ensure adherence to standards through documentation reviews, commissioning activities, design summits and data center physical audits.   

 

Problem Solving 

• Independently resolve complex, cross-functional technical issues requiring initiative and sound engineering judgement.   

• Recommend system-level improvements to mitigate risk and prevent recurring issues.   

• Validate the suitability of components, solutions, and action plans prior to deployment.   

 

Technical Expertise 

• Demonstrate expert-level knowledge of data center mechanical and HVAC systems and provide high-level operational support.   

• Engineering Change Management review and approval in conformance to Company policy, Engineering design standards and SLA timeframes.   

• Maintain strong working knowledge of electrical systems and control engineering interfaces.   

 

Qualifications, key skills and experience: 

• Mechanical Engineering Degree, proven experience in Mechanical / HVAC engineering within data centers, critical facilities, or adjacent industries such as marine engineering, manufacturing, heavy industrial, or utilities.   

• Strong operational engineering capability, with the ability to review and approve MOPs, CMRs, engineering scripts, and support complex live environments.   

• Demonstrated ability to lead through influence—providing clear technical direction while working collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.   

• A calm, pragmatic temperament, comfortable operating autonomously, prioritizing workload, and making sound decisions under pressure.   

• Solid understanding of project delivery, including contractor oversight, commissioning, and interaction with PMO and Design & Construction teams.   

• High quality communication and documentation skills, including technical writing, SOP development, and engagement with senior stakeholders.   

• Strong alignment to safety, efficiency, sustainability, and continuous improvement, with a proactive approach to risk identification and problem solving.   

• Ability to attain and maintain NV1 security clearances.
