Job Summary
The Staff Engineer for NPE Observability is the lead technical authority for the design and implementation of Equinix’s global telemetry fabric. You bridge the gap between high-scale distributed software and global network hardware, driving the execution of our most complex data-intensive initiatives. You own the technical integrity of our streaming pipelines, ensuring that telemetry from the global fleet is ingested, normalized, and processed with sub-second latency. As a master of software patterns and a specialist in high-throughput systems, you are the primary driver of technical excellence within the Network Platform Engineering (NPE) group.
Responsibilities
Technical Architecture & Execution
From Vision to Reality: Translate high-level architectural blueprints into hands-on automation strategies and scalable infrastructure that powers our global visibility
Roadmap Ownership: Drive the engineering team toward key milestones, ensuring that the code we ship aligns with the long-term NPE vision
Lead System Design: Lead the team through complex implementations, establishing the gold standard for how we handle real-time streaming telemetry and high-performance databases
Reliability & Support Engineering
Stakeholder Synthesis: Translate complex product requirements into technical specifications, managing relationships with internal and external customers
Service Standards: Define critical SLA metrics and ensure the observability platform maintains global ITIL compliance
Incident Leadership: Serve as the senior point of contact for complex root-cause analysis and the resolution of cross-platform outages
Innovation & R&D
Hands-on Research: Evaluate emerging technologies Model-Driven Telemetry (MDT) to keep the platform at the cutting edge
Process Influence: Prove out new concepts and define change-management practices that impact the broader business strategy
Qualifications
Tenure: 5+ years in software engineering/distributed systems and 3+ years in large-scale network engineering
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or a related field
Software Excellence: Mastery of SOLID and Clean Architecture applied to Big Data; proficiency in Java, Go, and SQL
Networking Depth: Expert understanding of Model-Driven Telemetry; ability to optimize gNMI over SNMP for high-scale environments. Proficiency and experience working with service provider networking technologies and protocols, including BGP, IS-IS, MPLS, QoS, EVPN, VXLAN
Technical Stack: Hands-on expertise with Apache Flink, Kafka, Clickhouse, Prometheus, Thanos, and Kubernetes
Automation Mastery: Expert-level Python or Go skills; experience building custom collectors or API integrations for network OS (Junos, Nokia, Arista, etc.)
Why Join the NPE Observability Team?
Solve the Industry’s Toughest Data-Scale Challenges Joining the NPE Observability team as a Staff Engineer means taking the wheel of a high-performance engine that processes massive, real-time telemetry streams at a scale few companies on earth can match. You will be the technical force that bridges deep service provider networking with modern big data software patterns, mastering tools like Flink, Kafka, and ClickHouse to tame high-cardinality data from a global fleet. If you are driven by the challenge of building "carrier-grade" distributed systems where every millisecond of latency and every drop of data matters, this is where you will do the most impactful work of your career.
