Leading with Trust, Learning and Intention
In our latest edition of the Leaders at Equinix: Empower, Elevate & Evolve interview series, we have the privilege of speaking with Abi Holmes, Director of Design Delivery at Equinix. Abi shares her valuable insights on leadership, continuous learning, the power of diverse perspective and the importance of work-life balance. Her experiences as a leader and a parent have shaped her approach to leadership, emphasizing trust, empowerment and the value of individuality. Abi's commitment to making a lasting impact, fostering an inclusive environment, and supporting others serves as an inspiration to leaders everywhere.
Abi's hardest leadership lesson came during a challenging period in her life - having her first child during the COVID-19 pandemic. Balancing the demands of a newborn and a high-pressure role taught her an invaluable truth: control is an illusion. Abi realized that true leadership is not about controlling outcomes or micromanaging processes, but about trusting others to bring their best to the table. She emphasizes the importance of empowering her team to own their work and thrive in their own ways. Abi states, "True leadership is not about having all the answers or dictating every step. It is about creating a culture of trust, valuing diverse approaches and recognizing that the best results come when people are given the freedom to bring their whole selves to their work."
Learning Resources
and Mentorship
Abi finds inspiration and valuable lessons in unexpected places, such as parenting books. Abi explains, "They taught me the importance of understanding where people are coming from, appreciating that every individual is unique and finding ways to support them in reaching their potential." Additionally, she has gained valuable tools for managing priorities and maintaining focus from books like Brian Tracy’s "Eat That Frog" and Dale Carnegie’s "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living." Abi's dedication to continuous learning, whether through books or in-person courses, has shaped her leadership style and enabled her to better understand, support and inspire the individuals around her.
"In a male-dominated industry, I have often found myself as the only woman in the room. This year, at two leadership events at Equinix, I was the only female technical director—a clear reminder of the gender imbalance in our field. Despite this, the lessons I have learned from the men who have led and inspired me have been invaluable," shares Abi.
One of the most important lessons she has gained is the power of speaking up and sharing ideas openly. She states, "As leaders, mistakes are inevitable, but what truly defines us is how we respond—how we confront challenges, learn from them, and move forward." Abi also emphasizes the importance of listening and understanding others' perspectives. She believes that everyone's voice matters and that taking the time to truly understand others enhances collaboration and drives better outcomes. Abi reflects, "True leadership involves stepping into the conversation, even when it feels uncomfortable, and listening as much as speaking."
How the Team Describes Abi
Abi's team would describe her as someone who speaks up, prioritizes open communication and ensures that everyone's voice is heard. They would also highlight her ability to listen and value the ideas and perspectives of others. She thrives on building relationships and believes that collaboration and a bit of fun can make even the toughest challenges more manageable. "In the end, my team would describe me as someone who is decisive, passionate and always there to support them, all while fostering an environment where their ideas are valued and we enjoy the journey together," shares Abi.
As a leader, Abi wants to be remembered for making a lasting impact wherever she goes. She strives to support others, foster an inclusive environment and challenge the status quo to achieve meaningful results. Abi states, "I want to be remembered as someone who isn't afraid to speak up, take risks and drive outcomes." Above all, she hopes to be remembered for her kindness, passion and commitment to empowering others to reach their full potential. Abi's goal is to leave a positive impact on the teams she has led and the organizations she has been a part of.
Work and Wellness
Abi emphasizes the importance of intentionality when it comes to work and wellness. She suggests five practices to maximize wellness:
1. Set Clear Goals: "Write them down and make sure they are visible. Having clear goals for your career, family, and wellness keeps you focused and helps you track progress. Break them down into smaller, actionable steps and revisit them regularly."
2. Compartmentalize Your Time: "Balancing work and life is not about multitasking—it is about creating boundaries. I dedicate specific times for work, family and self-care. This allows me to be fully present in each area without feeling like I am neglecting one for the other."
3. Prioritize Wellness Every Day: "No matter how busy my schedule is, I make time for exercise. For example, I run some mornings at 6:30 am—this routine sets the tone for my day, both physically and mentally. It is my time to recharge before diving into the demands of work and family."
4. Meditation for Clarity: "When the going gets tough, I turn to meditation. A few minutes of mindfulness helps me reset, clear my mind and regain focus. It is a simple yet powerful way to calm my thoughts and approach challenges with a fresh perspective."
5. Embrace the Tough Moments: "It is easy to feel overwhelmed, especially with a demanding job and family responsibilities. But I have learned that even when it feels tough, it is possible to push through and make it happen. Flexibility and a positive mindset are crucial. It is about doing your best, not being perfect."
Overall, Abi's experiences as a leader and a parent have shaped her approach to leadership, emphasizing trust, empowerment and the value of individuality. Stay tuned for our next installment of Leaders at Equinix!
